Prevent Heat Strokes: Tips to Survive Heat Waves

Summer is here, and this time a bit early! During warnings of oppressive heat, it is crucial to follow certain precautions to avoid the harmful effects of heat on your health.

Adults and children can suffer from heat strokes. It is also important to pay particular attention to the elderly. Here are some essential tips to prevent the effects of heat:

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water. Keep water within reach at all times and take a few sips every 20 minutes. Drinking at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily helps your body cope with the heat and avoid dehydration.

Avoid alcoholic beverages, which can exacerbate dehydration.

Reduce Physical Effort

To protect yourself from the heat, avoid intense physical activities. If you need to engage in activities, prioritize cooler times of the day, such as early morning or evening, to prevent heat strokes.

Cool Down Regularly

Take a cool shower or bath, or regularly cool your body with a wet towel. This will help keep your body at a normal temperature.

Optimize Your Environment

Ventilate your home and close the curtains to keep your interior as cool as possible. Staying in a cool place for 2 to 3 hours a day is also recommended.

Avoid Heavy and Spicy Meals

Heavy and spicy meals can increase body temperature and contribute to dehydration. Favour light meals, rich in fruits and vegetables, which are hydrating and easy to digest. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and good hydration are also very beneficial for your joints, making it a two-in-one!

Be Aware of Heat Stroke Signs

Learn to recognize the signs of heat stroke, such as headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, and dry, hot skin. If you or someone else shows these symptoms, seek a cool place immediately and hydrate. If symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional.
